Automotive Aerodynamics Course

Want to get a job in the automotive industry? Get into automotive aerodynamic research? Make aerodynamic improvements to your own car? Or just want to learn more about car aerodynamics? Our automotive aerodynamic course is designed to help you achieve your dreams! Enrol here!

In it, you’ll learn from the fundamentals of car aerodynamics all the way up to complex systems of aerodynamics of cars.

It covers:

Module 1:

- The fundamental aerodynamic forces governing a car

- The aerodynamic moments on a car

- Bluff body aerodynamics versus streamline body aerodynamics, and which category a car falls into (and how that can change)

Module 2:

- How to make the front more aerodynamic

- The effects of the hood on the car’s drag and lift/downforce

- What happens at the hood and windshield junction and how to improve it

- How to design the A pillars of a car

- How the roof affects a car’s aerodynamics

Module 3

- What cooling drag is and how it affects a car’s aerodynamics

- How the underbody’s roughness affects its aerodynamics

- Designing the front lip of a car

Module 4:

- How to design a splitter plate and what happens if its designed poorly

- What front wheel deflectors do

- How the car’s ride height affects the lift and drag, and how that changes with different types of cars

- What diffusers do and how to design them

Module 5:

- How to angle the rear window to reduce the drag of a car, and its effects on the lift and downforce production

- The different types of rears

- How C pillars produce vortices, and how to mitigate them

Module 6:

- The aerodynamics of different rim designs

- How the tire affects the flow around the wheels, and the subsequent drag changes

- How the wheelhouse volume changes the car’s aerodynamics

- What air curtains are, and how to design them

- The effects of rear and top wheelhouse vents

Module 7:

- What spoilers are, how to design them, and their effects on the car’s forces

- How to design a wing, including multi-element designs

- What gurney flaps do

- Why end plates are used

Module 8:

- What canards are and why they’re used

- The different types of ducts including hood scoops, ram intakes, and NACA ducts

About the course:

This course consists of eight modules that teach you about different parts of a car’s aerodynamics. The modules can be taken at your pace. You can ask the instructor questions about the course and get answers.

At the end, you get a certificate of completion to verify your achievement.
